Not medical advice, not a medical device
In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. Exposure Radar isn’t for emergencies.
- Exposure Radar is for general wellness and personal awareness. It is not a medical device. It doesn’t diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or condition.
- It isn’t medical advice, and it doesn’t replace advice from a doctor or other qualified clinician.
- A strain signal means some of your vitals have moved away from your usual. It isn’t a diagnosis. The app can’t tell you whether you’re infected or contagious, and a good score doesn’t mean you’re healthy.
- Don’t use the app to decide whether you need medical care, and don’t delay or ignore medical advice because of something it shows.
- Vaccine reminders are general reminders. Ask a clinician which vaccines are right for you.
Estimates can be wrong
Every score is an estimate built from imperfect information. For example:
- Location Services can miss visits or place them wrongly.
- The type of place is inferred from nearby map points and can be wrong.
- Bluetooth counts devices, not people, and only while the app is open.
- Wastewater data describes a whole community, can be days old, and isn’t available everywhere.
- Health data depends on your devices and on how consistently you wear them.
- The formulas are simplified, and they haven’t been clinically validated.
Treat the scores as one input among many. See how they’re calculated.
Subscription and free trial
- What needs a subscription: using the app with your own data requires an auto-renewing yearly subscription. Demo mode, which uses sample data, is free. Viewing scores that someone shares with you doesn’t require a subscription.
- Price: $39.99 per year in U.S. dollars, or the local equivalent shown in the App Store. Prices can vary by country.
- Free trial: eligible new subscribers get a 1-week free trial. Apple decides who is eligible. When the trial ends, your subscription starts and you’re charged, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
- Automatic renewal: your subscription renews every year. Your Apple Account is charged within the 24 hours before the current period ends, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Cancelling: on your iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops future renewals, and you keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel your subscription.
- Unused trial time: if you buy a subscription during a free trial, the rest of the trial is forfeited.
- Billing and refunds: Apple handles all payments and refunds. I don’t see your payment details. To ask for a refund, go to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Price changes: Apple tells subscribers about a price increase before it applies to them, and you can cancel.
- Restoring a purchase: after reinstalling, or on a new iPhone, go to Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases in the app, signed in with the same Apple Account.
Family & Friends
- Share only with people who agree to receive your scores, and invite only people who want to see them.
- Anyone who has your invite link can see your shared scores. Send it only to people you choose, and don’t post it publicly. If a link reaches the wrong person, stop sharing. Old links stop working, and the app makes a new one next time.
- Scores can say something about your health. Keep that in mind before you share.
- Scores that someone shares with you are theirs. Don’t pass on their link or their scores without their permission, and don’t use them to pressure, embarrass or harm anyone.
- The relay that delivers shared scores is an online service, and it may sometimes be unavailable.
Outside data
The app relies on data and services from others: CDC wastewater data, Apple Weather, Apple Maps and the FCC’s county lookup. They’re provided as-is. They can be late, incomplete, wrong or unavailable, and I can’t guarantee them. These organizations don’t endorse Exposure Radar.
Acceptable use
Use Exposure Radar for yourself, and lawfully. Don’t:
- use it to track or monitor another person, for example by installing it on their phone;
- use anyone’s scores to make decisions about their job, housing, insurance, credit, schooling or access to services;
- try to get other people’s shared data without their permission, or try to break, overload or get around the security of the app or the relay;
- copy, modify or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it;
- use the app for anything illegal.
Your privacy
The Privacy Policy and the Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy explain how your information is handled.
Changes to the app
I may add, change or remove features. The app may not always be available or free of errors.
Disclaimers
To the fullest extent the law allows, the app and everything in it are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. That includes warranties of accuracy, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. I don’t promise that the app will be accurate, uninterrupted or error-free, or that it will keep you from getting sick. Some places don’t allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- I’m not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or opportunities, arising from your use of the app.
- I’m not responsible for decisions you make based on the app’s estimates, or for any illness you catch or pass on, whatever the app showed.
- My total liability for all claims relating to the app is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the app in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn’t allow to be limited, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence where the law forbids such limits. Some of these limits may not apply to you where you live.
Disputes
If you have a problem with the app, please email me first. Most issues can be sorted out quickly. Any dispute about the app or these terms will be handled under applicable law. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the consumer protection laws where you live.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms. I’ll post the new version here with a new effective date, and tell you in the app about significant changes before they take effect. If you keep using the app after that, you accept the new terms. If you don’t agree, stop using the app and cancel your subscription.
